An update on state-required furlough days

Administrative and faculty employees will not be required to take additional furlough days; the impact to Classified employees is still being determined.

Gov. Jared Polis announced Tuesday that state workers will begin taking mandatory furlough days, unless they are considered exempt, to help address the budget shortfall created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

State-imposed furlough requirements will depend on salary levels. Employees in lower salary brackets will be required to take fewer furlough days than employees in higher salary brackets, with the maximum requirement being four days. The state expects to save between $7 million and $8 million, and the plan will affect approximately 23,600 state employees.

What this means for MSU Denver employees:

• As the Metropolitan State University of Denver has already required non-Classified employees to take furlough days, those employees will not be asked to take any additional furlough days.
• The impact to Classified/exempt employees is still being determined, and more information will be provided to those employees in the coming weeks.
