New Immigrant Art Journal welcomes submissions

The digital space will allow members of the campus community to share their immigration stories and experiences through various art forms.

Four Metropolitan State University of Denver departments are inviting students and employees to contribute their immigration experiences to the University’s newly created digital Immigrant Art Journal.

Co-developed by the Gender Institute for Teaching Advocacy, the Department of Art, the Department of Chicana/o Studies, MetMedia and Immigrant Services, the journal welcomes submissions from the entire tri-institutional Auraria Campus immigrant community, including faculty, staff and students. The journal will serve as a digital space for members of the campus community to share their immigration stories and experiences through various art forms. The hope is that the journal will grow into a powerful tool of artistic creation, communication and narration that celebrates the strengths and complexities of the Auraria immigrant community.

Submissions may include reproducible drawings, visual art, poetry, narration and storytelling, videos and photos of sculptures. Submissions can be inspired by any topic related to immigration, such as the movement of people, families and individuals across borders; the physical journey or its outcome; family, neighbors and community; adjusting to a new life, “living in two worlds”; the immigrant, migrant, expat or refugee experience in the U.S.; and the strength of families and immigrant communities.

The journal will appear at least temporarily on the Immigrant Services website. As organizers receive more submissions, the goal is to transition to a dedicated digital space and eventually to print physical copies.
