Students taking notes during a College of Business course. In response to changing workforce needs, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Department of Marketing has developed new minor and certificate programs in digital marketing, preparing students for a growing field and ample career and internship opportunities.

The minor (for non-Marketing majors) and certificate  (for Marketing majors) will enable students to create digital marketing strategies as well as gain practical skills and earn industry-relevant certifications, helping them learn how to work with industry technology and systems and develop creative content.

Marketing Trends Report shows that digital marketing was the most hired role within marketing in 2018. Nearly 60% of marketing organizations hiring are looking for a digital marketer, but only 19% of digital marketers are actively looking for new opportunities (McKinley Marketing Partners, 2019), showing an opportunity for new college graduates. Additionally, more than 50% of the internships posted with MSU Denver in the marketing industry are focused on digital, and even more incorporate some aspect of digital marketing.

“Our goal is to offer a leading-edge program that mixes marketing theory with hands-on, technology-driven experiences that create a strong path to internships and employment,” said Sally Baalbaki-Yassine, Ph.D., professor of Marketing. “Digital marketing is a growing area of study, and we feel that our robust, industry-driven approach to program development will create opportunities for our students. The engagement we have already experienced from the business and alumni community shows a strong interest in this topic.”

The new minor and certificate are already proving popular, and classes are filling quickly. A new course offering, MKT 3200 – Digital Marketing Fundamentals, is already popular with students. The Marketing faculty are also developing a new course for the spring semester, MKT 4200 – Content Marketing. Courses for the program will grow as capacity is needed.

In developing these new offerings, MSU Denver is also filling an academic void in the state and putting the University in a leadership position with regard to digital marketing education. Additionally, Marketing faculty members actively engage the business community in creating relevant curriculum, career-building experiences, mentoring and networking opportunities for students.

As the digital-marketing minor is designed for non-Marketing majors, students in other College of Business departments (Management, CIS, Finance, Accounting and Economics), as well as students studying journalism, public relations, art, graphic design, communication, hospitality management and many more subjects would benefit from earning a digital-marketing minor.
