The MSU Denver faculty brain trust reaches almost every corner of the academic spectrum, and we are always proud to see Roadrunners sharing their knowledge. Each month, the Early Bird highlights a few faculty members who have served as subject-matter experts on timely news topics – providing dynamic perspectives on critical issues.

Here’s a sampling from June:

Rosemarie Allen, Ph.D., professor, Early-childhood Education, talked with 9News, KUNC Radio, CBS4 and Scripps Media in June about the recent resurgence in the Black Lives Matter movement, racism in communities and how to talk to children about race.

Andrea Borrego, Ph.D., associate professor, Criminal Justice and Criminology, interviewed with Fox31, CGTN America and CBS4 in June about Black Lives Matter protests, police-reform strategies and the call to “defund the police.”

Katia Campbell, Ph.D., associate professor, Communication Studies, spoke with 850KOA and Fox31 in June to offer insight on approaching conversations about race and how to combat racism within our communities.

Devon Wright, Ph.D., assistant professor of Africana Studies, interviewed with CGTN America and 9News in June to talk about the special significance of Juneteenth in 2020 and the history of other racial tensions and protests in the U.S.

Shelby Balik, Ph.D., associate professor, History, interviewed with La Voz Colorado and Denver7 in June about the call for the removal of select historic statues in Denver and their corresponding symbolism.

Steve Beaty, Ph.D., professor, Computer Science, interviewed with Scripps Media in June about the potential issues with facial-recognition technology and why technology companies are ending their contracts with police departments.
