There’s something for everyone in this week’s event roundup.

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez will visit campus to discuss “We Rise: The Earth Guardians Guide to Building a Movement That Restores the Planet,” the 2019-20 selection for 1 Book/1 Project/2 Transform. The program will start with an Aztec dance performance in the Tivoli Quad from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. At 11 a.m., Spoken Word Contest winners will perform and then Martinez will speak about his book and his environmental-justice initiatives. The event will conclude with a public book signing. Seats are limited and first come, first served.

Jazz-flamenco performances and events

Internationally acclaimed jazz-flamenco group New Bojaira blends jazz improvisation with flamenco rhythms, dance and vocals, taking audiences on a fascinating multicultural excursion. The group will visit campus Thursday for a series of events and performances presented by the Honors Program in collaboration with the Denver Project for Humanistic Inquiry, Department of Modern Languages, Department of Music, Undergraduate Studies and the Golda Meir Center for Political Leadership.

Roundtable discussion: Jazz of the Past and the Future

Featuring New Bojaira; Steve Mullins, local musician, instructor and flamenco scholar; Norman Provizer, Ph.D., professor of Political Science and jazz aficionado; María Vazquez, local flamenco dancer and instructor.

AHEC will offer a variety of safety and emergency-preparedness trainings this semester. This week, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge to navigate an active-shooter incident or a hazardous-weather situation.

Film screening and conversation

Join the Denver Project for Humanistic Inquiry for a screening of “Liyana” on Oct. 23. The award-winning, genre-defying documentary tells the story of five children in the Kingdom of Eswatini who turn past trauma into an original fable about a girl named Liyana who embarks on a perilous quest to save her young twin brothers. The film weaves her animated journey together with poetic documentary scenes to create an inspiring tale of perseverance and hope. The screening will be followed by a conversation with directors Amanda and Aaron Kopp.
