Roadrunners and community members are invited to attend events celebrating the 2021 Distinguished Visiting Professorship. The program has long honored Richard T. Castro, influential community organizer, social worker and Colorado state representative, and now also recognizes the important contributions and longtime leadership of his wife, Virginia.  

This year’s theme of “RePRESSente: Broadcasting, nuestras historias” highlights Latina journalists who tell the stories of Latino/a and other marginalized communities and features a virtual keynote address by Maria Hinojosa, 2021 Richard T. and Virginia Castro Distinguished Visiting Professor.

September 11 remembrance events

Register by Friday for events hosted by the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion.

The Metropolitan State University of Denver CMEI will host two activities commemorating the 20th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

American Flag Placement

MSU Denver students, student clubs and members of the faculty and staff are invited to help place American flags on near the Tivoli lawn. Each flag will represent one of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

MSU Denver students and members of the faculty and staff are invited to attend an interfaith reflection and moment of silence. Prior registration for this event is required.

Dialogue: Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom

This hybrid event will start with a presentation by Katia Campbell, Ph.D., professor of Communication Studies, and Michael Benitez, Ph.D., vice president for Diversity and Inclusion, that will address the complexities of free speech and academic freedom and their implications at MSU Denver and other higher-education institutions. Campbell and Benitez will also explore bias, or when speech turns threatening and abusive, especially for people with minoritized identities, and how to respond to bias within a campus community such as MSU Denver.

Developing Healthy Practices for Managing Stress

Faculty and staff members are invited to attend a panel discussion titled Developing Healthy Practices for Managing Stress.

Drawing on the knowledge and insights of MSU Denver experts, the Sept. 9 panel discussion will explore physical, psychological and social habits that can help reduce the stressors that may result from our return to campus. The panel discussion will be held in JSSB Room 400, and attendees may also join via Zoom (see link below). If you plan to attend in person, please submit your RSVP below.

Call for submissions: MSU Denver’s Strategy, Marketing and Communications team is looking for student-employee video submissions for the University’s fall TikTok/Snapchat advertising campaign. 

Submission details: 

  • Goal: How would you encourage someone thinking about attending college/university to enroll at MSU Denver? How would you promote MSU Denver to a friend, colleague or family member?
  • Assignment: Create and submit a 15- to 30-second vertical video to share how MSU Denver has helped you reimagine possible.
