Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Professorship lecture and awards event
Since 1981, the Noel Distinguished Visiting Professorship has fostered multiculturalism, diversity and academic excellence by inviting renowned scholars and artists to Metropolitan State University of Denver to conduct classes, seminars, performances and lectures for Roadrunners and the larger Denver community. This year’s Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Visiting Professor is Phoebe A. Haddon, J.D., legal trailblazer, acclaimed academic and niece of Rachel B. Noel. Haddon is a law professor at Rutgers University and served as the chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s board of directors. She was the 2019 recipient of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2015 she received the Trailblazer Award from the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association.

Hope and Healing Panel of Equals
As the final event in the Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Visiting Professorship lineup, a panel of former honorees will discuss the event’s theme, “Hope and Healing.” Panelists include:

Panel discussion on intersection of freedom of speech and classroom management
In light of the social, political and economic turmoil our nation has faced, classroom conversations can at times become intense and can be experienced as threatening by faculty members and students alike. Faculty and staff members are invited to join a Zoom panel discussion hosted by Interim Provost Bill Henry, Ph.D., to discuss the intersection of freedom of speech and classroom management. Panel experts will provide guidance and recommendations regarding how faculty members can negotiate difficult situations. Faculty and staff members are encouraged to submit questions in advance.

Undocupeers training
The two-part Undocupeers training will teach participants how to better support and work alongside undocumented students. The training is based on a workshop that was developed by undocumented students themselves and the advocacy group United We Dream. Participation requires attending both sessions, which each provide the opportunity to hear from an underrepresented student population whose voices often go unheard.

Anti-racism event
Support MSU Denver’s efforts to become an anti-racist institution by registering for a free online event hosted by the United Nations Association of Boulder County. This educational and cultural event with social-justice author Paul Kivel (organized by Kelly McGinnis, MSU Denver Master of Social Work student) will focus on how the broader community can support immigrant populations and how citizens can use their various privileged identities to support those being systemically oppressed.

Know-your-rights workshop
Learn about your constitutional rights, how to assert your rights when interacting with law-enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, how to intervene if someone around you is being unlawfully detained or questioned and how to create a safer campus community for all Roadrunners.
