C2 Hub and CLAS partner to support student career attainment

The new Faculty Engagement unit offers programming for learners and is a helpful resource for faculty.

In response to the Faculty Senate resolution supporting the value of a liberal-arts-and-sciences education, staff members within the Classroom to Career Hub’s new Faculty Engagement unit have developed resources and programming tailored to the needs of College of Letters, Arts and Sciences students.

The programming reinforces to CLAS students that the essential skills they have built through liberal-arts-and-sciences courses will apply to an abundance of career options. For example, the National Association of Colleges and Employers has identified eight career competencies that employers are looking for: critical thinking/problem solving, oral/written communication, teamwork/collaboration, digital technology, leadership, professionalism/work ethic, career management and global/intercultural fluency.

Faculty members who are interested in tying these competencies to their courses and would like a course consultation can contact Pam Ansburg Ph.D., interim director for Faculty Engagement, or Bessie Nolan, career specialist and CLAS liaison in the C2 Hub.

Faculty and staff members are also encouraged to promote career-development programs for CLAS students, including:

• Meet-and-greets
• Today through Friday from 2:30-3:30 p.m., students will be able to meet Nolan and ask questions about their career planning. Students can RSVP on Career Link.
• CLAS Future Career Interests Survey
• By completing this survey, students will receive personalized information about upcoming events and resources based on their interests, not just their majors.
• CLAS Career Readiness Boot Camp
• In this intensive one-week course held over spring break, 25 CLAS students will learn about career exploration, transferable skills, personal branding, résumés, LinkedIn and interviewing. Applications are due by Feb. 22, and students who complete the program will receive a $180 stipend.
• This April 13 workshop is designed for liberal-arts majors and focuses on career exploration and transferable skills. Students can RSVP on Career Link.
• “So … what are you going to do with that major?”

Additionally, the C2 Hub is working with Activate Workforce Solutions and Colorado Concern to bring paid yearlong internship and mentoring opportunities specifically for CLAS students with the Activate Leadership Program. More information on the application process and roles for students is forthcoming.

Nolan is also regularly available to meet with students one-on-one to advise on résumés, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, job and internship searching, graduate-school applications and more.
