Silhouette of man blowing cigarette smoke. In recent months, there have been countless news stories about the newly termed condition EVALI, or E-cigarette or Vaping Product Use Associated Lung Injury. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that there have been 1,888 documented EVALI cases and 37 EVALI-related deaths in 24 states.

Of the data available on substance use among 867 patients, CDC researchers found that 34% reported exclusive use of THC-containing products and 11% reported exclusive use of nicotine-containing products. However, users often combine nicotine and THC in their e-cigarette or vaping, affecting the already-complicated task of identifying a causal relationship between e-cigarette/vaping and EVALI.

In response to this health issue, especially considering its prevalence among young adults, universities across the nation are taking steps towards EVALI education, prevention and treatment. One example is the proactive Tobacco Cessation program offered at the Health Center at Auraria. The program is free for campus members. It includes meetings with a provider to develop a quit plan, the option for nicotine-replacement therapy and ongoing support or coaching.

Whether you’ve decided to quit tobacco, are interested in the program or are concerned about possible medical issues connected to tobacco and/or nicotine use, please contact the Health Center at Auraria to schedule an appointment at 303-615-9999.
