Nonretained Student Analysis: The students who broke up with us

Presenter: Mark Baccei, Ph.D., enrollment-management research analyst

Each year, Metropolitan State University of Denver faculty, staff and leadership have more and more conversations about enrollment. These conversations focus on numbers, strategies, opportunities and concerns and often raise questions such as:
- Why did these students leave?
- Where did they go?
- Weren’t they happy here?
- Were they always planning to leave?
- Could we have done something to help them?
- How are they doing now?
All these questions, while related to student departure, awkwardly sound a little bit like a breakup. So what can MSU Denver do to strengthen our student relationships? The first step is finding answers.
By merging student-level data with data from the National Student Clearinghouse, the SEM team sought to learn more about nonretained MSU Denver students. The presentation will examine key data elements uncovered to shed light on the various subgroups that make up the broader nonretained population. Finally, attendees will learn about trends among students who have transferred out to new institutions, including institutional type and major.
