Mariachi Los Correcaminos celebrates Mother’s Day with spring concert and special guest soloist Christine Márquez-Hudson.

If you are looking for a unique way to celebrate Mother’s Day this year, look no further than the Mariachi Los Correcaminos de MSU Denver spring ensemble concert at the King Center Concert Hall on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Mariachi Los Correcaminos (Roadrunners) was founded in 2013 by a small group of Adams City High School alumni and mariachi fans who enrolled at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Since then, Mariachi Los Correcaminos de MSU Denver has enriched the community with music, culture and entertainment – keeping Mexican culture alive through the teaching and performing of traditional mariachi music across campus and the state.

In 2015, the Department of Music began offering mariachi as an accredited course, and MSU Denver students have performed mariachi at the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference, for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, for the Mexican Consulate, with the Colorado Symphony and more.

“Students who participate in Mariachi Ensemble develop sophisticated concert-level artistry in mariachi performance,” said Lorenzo Trujillo, Ph.D., director of Mariachi Los Correcaminos and ensemble course instructor. “Mariachi is a fantastic way to promote cultural understanding and an appreciation of Mexican music.”

Each year, Mariachi Los Correcaminos invites a high-caliber guest artist who exemplifies mariachi tradition to join them for their annual Mother’s Day concert. This year, the honor goes to MSU Denver’s own Christine Márquez-Hudson, vice president of advancement and executive director of the MSU Foundation. 

“It is a little-known fact among her current colleagues and associates that Christine and her family have long participated in the tradition of music and mariachi,” said Trujillo. “She has a unique history of excellence in all that she does, and we are thrilled to have her join us.”

In the past, Márquez-Hudson sang at many mariachi events for the Latino community of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Denver, directed by her father, Colorado Court of Appeals Judge (Ret.) Larry Márquez. 

“It’s an honor to sing with Lorenzo Trujillo – one of our community’s great mariachi artists,” said Márquez-Hudson. “I’m even more excited about performing with our MSU Denver students!”

All Music Department events are free to MSU Denver students, faculty and staff with a valid ID, and this event is $5 per ticket for the public. Tickets are available through the King Center box office at 303-556-2296. Free parking is available in the 7^th Street Parking Garage with a voucher upon exit.
