Panel of four photos taken during Journalism classesMetropolitan State University of Denver’s Journalism and Technical Communication Department will celebrate its new name, degree structure and course prefix as part of Jump Day from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 18 in the Central Classroom Building. The event also will provide an opportunity for the department to showcase new opportunities it will offer students this fall.

Starting fall 2019, the department will simplify its degree programs. Instead of three degrees and eight concentrations, students may choose a major that aligns with career titles in the industry. Students may earn bachelor’s degrees in:

  • Journalism
  • Broadcast Journalism
  • Public Relations
  • Media Production and Leadership
  • Video Production
  • Technical Writing and Editing

Along with the change in degrees, the department will change its name to Journalism and Media Production and its course prefix to JMP, hence the “Jump Day” event title.

A free taco bar will be available along with alumni guest speakers, stations demonstrating new courses (featuring drone journalism, 360-degree video production, photojournalism, social documentary) and faculty to help students navigate the degree options and map out a path for on-time graduation. The first 20 students who meet with a faculty advisor during the first week of April will receive parking passes or Tivoli bookstore gift cards.

“We hope that Jump Day inspires students to further explore different classes and resources we offer and to find out which path is right for them,” said Shaun Schafer, department chair. “We can help prepare students for a wide range of media careers – perhaps more than they know.”
