Be an ally to DREAMer students

Undocupeers training helps faculty and staff understand the realities and challenges faced by undocumented Roadrunners.

If you’ve visited the lobby of the Jordan Student Success Building in recent months, you may have noticed a big blue banner proclaiming that Metropolitan State University of Denver loves immigrants. The University puts its values of inclusion and access on display and into practice by offering a variety of support services and resources for immigrant, DACA and DREAMer students — including the upcoming Undocupeers training.

Hosted by Immigrant Services and the DREAMer Network, the five-hour Undocupeers training and workshop aims to raise awareness and educate the campus community about the realities and challenges of being an undocumented student. Through engaging activities, factual information and a review of relevant on- and off-campus resources, staff hope to begin or continue conversations on how to better support and work alongside undocumented students.

The training also provides the unique and invaluable opportunity to hear directly from undocumented students themselves. DREAMer students share their experiences coming to the U.S., learning of their undocumented status and navigating a complex immigration and education system that often seems stacked against them.

The two-day training will take place March 12 and 14, and attendees must participate in both sessions.

Metropolitan State University of Denver’s DREAMer Network — a group of faculty, staff and Immigrant Services administrators — provides support to undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, attended U.S. schools and seek permanent legal residency. The group collaborates on projects, raises scholarship and programming funds, holds workshops and advises University leadership to improve college access, retention and graduation of undocumented college students.
