The holiday season is often a boon for food pantries and charitable organizations, and this year the Metropolitan State University of Denver community has certainly brought comfort and cheer to many students experiencing hunger and food insecurity.
The Roadrunner Food Pantry — sponsored by Student Engagement & Wellness, the Student Government Assembly and the MSU Denver community — fights hunger by providing nutritional food for any MSU Denver student in need. The pantry is stocked mainly by donations from caring individuals and groups, meaning the viability of the Roadrunner Food Pantry is linked to the generosity of faculty, staff, fellow students, alumni and the greater MSU Denver community.
This year, that community is showing its strength and commitment to ensuring that all students succeed, helping the pantry increase its Thanksgiving impact by nearly 60 percent.
“We have had overwhelming support from across the MSU Denver community,” said Erica Quintana-Garcia, case management coordinator for the Roadrunner Food Pantry. “Last year, we provided 55 students with Thanksgiving baskets; this year, we provided baskets for 85 students.”
Quintana-Garcia and the rest of the Roadrunner Food Pantry staff were thrilled to see a wide variety of individuals and departments donate food, money and gift cards to help alleviate student hunger, but there are still plenty of opportunities to make an impact this holiday season and beyond.
“Staff and faculty can continue to support the Roadrunner Food Pantry by making donations on our website or setting up a food drive on behalf of the food pantry,” Quintana-Garcia said.
The Roadrunner Food Pantry’s new and improved website offers more information on how you can help reduce student hunger as well as a list of recommended items, information on volunteering and additional support for students in need.
