What Gov. Hickenlooper’s proposed budget could mean for higher ed

Freezing tuition and increasing scholarship opportunities are included in the FY 2019-20 budget.

Gov. John Hickenlooper proposed a $33.4 billion Fiscal Year 2019-20 State budget on Nov. 1 that includes a significant investment in higher education. The proposed budget would dedicate nearly $121 million to higher education initiatives, freezing tuition levels across the state in an effort to increase affordability and improve student outcomes.

Additionally, $6.5 million would be funneled into a scholarship program for university students who commit to becoming teachers in rural and/or underserved districts, and a $77 million investment in the state’s K-12 budget aims to slowly bring per-student spending back to pre-recession levels.
