1 Book/1 Project/2 Transform = 4 can’t-miss events

In anticipation of author Anthony Ray Hinton’s visit, check out events designed to inspire critical thinking and thoughtful dialogue.

At age 29, Anthony Ray Hinton was wrongfully arrested and convicted of two violent crimes. When he was finally set free in 2015 after three decades on death row, he channeled his experience of incarceration, compassion, forgiveness and optimism into the book “The Sun Does Shine.”

Hinton’s book is the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadways Program’s selection for 2018’s 1 Book/1 Project/2 Transform, an annual series that brings members of the MSU Denver community together to read a common book, participate in facilitated book discussions and engage in a related community-service project.

Criminal-justice panel discussion

Panelists Rebecca Trammell, Ph.D., associate professor of criminal justice and criminology; James Lohman, capital-punishment defense attorney and reform advocate; and Elisabeth Epps, attorney, abolitionist and advocate for criminal-justice reform, will discuss mass incarceration, the death penalty and race.

Join Karen Lausa, founder and executive director of Words Beyond Bars, an organization that leads book discussions with incarcerated individuals to build literacy skills and confidence, for a discussion on her work within the criminal-justice system.

Hinton will visit MSU Denver to discuss his astonishing and inspiring account of his wrongful conviction. Doors will open at 10 a.m. for what will likely be a full house, so plan to arrive early. The presentation starts at 11 a.m., followed by Q&A at noon and a book signing at 12:30 p.m. Encourage students to bring their books so they can meet Hinton and get his signature. Check out the Reading and Learning Guide developed by Andrea R. Borrego, Ph.D., and Ofelia Schepers, Ph.D., to add another dynamic to Hinton’s talk.
