1. Security in Colorado: Addressing Today’s Threats and Challenges

Oct. 16, noon, St. Cajetan’s Event Center

Denver police Det. JR Masztalics, who has served for more than 25 years in law enforcement and the military, will discuss intelligence and counterterrorism. Masztalics is assigned to the Denver Police Department’s District 6 Investigations, where he is developing and implementing curriculum for Denver’s Countering Violent Extremism/Terrorism Prevention program in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security. 2. Music at MSU Denver Visiting Artists Series: Journey Live!

Oct. 18, King Center Concert Hall, 7:30 p.m.

The Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble will team up with composer Austin Wintory to present an original, interactive live performance of Wintory’s Grammy-nominated score to the video game “Journey.” Described as “the most beautiful game of its time” by IGN, “Journey” has been called one of gaming’s crowning achievements. 3. MSU Denver’s Inaugural Masculinity Symposium

Oct. 19, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Tivoli Student Union

The Need for Men — a masculinity symposium for all genders, races, ethnicities and sexualities presented by the Center for Multicultural Excellence and Inclusion — will bring Roadrunners together in an informal setting to explore and discuss topics related to masculinity and the need for men now and in the future. The symposium will feature interactive workshops, opportunities for discussion and a keynote address by Associate Professor Steven Rissman, N.D., who is launching a first-of-its-kind Men’s Health minor program at MSU Denver. 4. Richard T. Castro Visiting Professorship Events

Tijuana, Mexico-born author Luis Alberto Urrea has been hailed by NPR as a “master storyteller with a rock-and-roll heart,” making him a compelling selection for this year’s Richard T. Castro Visiting Professorship. Urrea’s visit to MSU Denver includes:

Panel Discussion with Immigration Experts and Community Members — 9:30-10:45 a.m.

Keynote Address and Q&A — 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Lunch — 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Student Discussion Session — 2-3:15 p.m.

Open House and Castro Exhibit at Casa Mayan — 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Reception — 5-7 p.m.

5. Third annual Women in STEM Conference — Implicit Bias: Allies and Action

Oct. 26, 8 a.m.-4:20 p.m., Tivoli Turnhalle

Researchers have long studied the various reasons why women are underrepresented in the STEM fields. This conference aims to not just address some of these reasons but give students, faculty and staff the understanding and tools to help them succeed in their careers of choice.

Keynote speaker Jessi L. Smith, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology and associate vice chancellor for research at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Smith’s primary research interest is on how societal norms and stereotypes undermine or support a person’s motivational experience. Her research specializes in social psychological aspects of gender and culture that advance the success of people at risk in education, business and health.
