If you see a red flag, grab a Red Folder

This helpful resource from the CARE Team includes all the tips and information you need to support or report students of concern.

Red folderMetropolitan State University of Denver works hard to ensure that all students are given the resources to persist, and sometimes that means first supporting faculty and staff. The CARE Team (consultation, assessment, referral, education) is one great example.

If faculty or staff notice that a student is behaving in a risky or concerning manner, or could potentially do harm to themselves or others, the CARE Team is ready to help. Members are trained to provide early assessment and suggest a reasonable course of action that recognizes the safety of the individual student as well as that of the larger MSU Denver community.

In the case of an emergency — or the possibility of imminent harm — faculty and staff are encouraged to:

  1. Call 911 or Auraria Campus Police dispatch at 303-556-5000. Note: Auraria Campus Police will coordinate with all applicable off-campus first responders and will dispatch support from on-campus resources such as the Health Center.
  2. Follow up with the CARE Team after the immediacy of the situation has been resolved.

Use of CARE Team services has increased by nearly 300 percent over the past three years, thanks in part to the Red Folder resource. Developed in spring 2017, the Red Folder creates better awareness of how and when to report concerns to best serve students.

Folders include:

  • Emergency-contact information
  • Potential student behaviors that could prompt a CARE Team report
  • Sample student-safety scenarios
  • Sexual-misconduct information
  • Community responsibilities

Red Folders are available to all faculty and staff in the Dean of Students Office, Tivoli 311.
