MSU Denver students walking in pride paradeTwenty-five years ago, LGBTQ students at Metropolitan State University of Denver found a new source of community on the Auraria Higher Education Campus.

Colorado’s first on-campus LGBTQIA organization offering community education, engagement and support services, the LGBTQ Student Resource Center has maintained its commitment to fostering acceptance, understanding and personal growth. Now, it’s time to keep the conversation moving forward — and celebrate.

In honor of the center’s Silver Anniversary, Roadrunners are invited to take part in a Hot Topic discussion on gender at 12:30 p.m. today in the Tivoli Multicultural Lounge. The panel discussion will explore the social construction of gender and gender behaviors learned through parents, schools, friends, religion, culture, media and society at large.

Panelists include Zander Keig, author, MSU Denver alum and clinical case manager on the Regional Transgender Care Team with Navy Medicine West; Sable Schultz, transgender-program manager for The Center; Eneri “Netty” Rodriguez Arauz, associate director of the Gender Institute for Teaching and Advocacy; and Tara Tull, chair and associate professor in the Department of Human Services. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to join the conversation.

Afterward, it’s time to enjoy cocktails, food, games and dancing to celebrate this important milestone. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their fanciest silver and purple attire for the LGBTQ Center’s Silver Soiree. The event begins at 6:30 tonight in the Tivoli Turnhalle, Suite 250. The evening will also include the debut of the Tivoli Student Union’s first gender-inclusive restroom.
