MSU Denver Model United Nations Team achieves accolades at prestigious leadership event.

Where in the world is Roadrunner expertise?

All over the globe – but from April 20-24, in San Francisco at the Model United Nations of the Far West Conference, a prestigious leadership event where the University made a significant impact.

The Metropolitan State University of Denver Model United Nations Team, accompanied by Richard Moeller, associate professor of political science, represented Austria and Jordan in the interdisciplinary simulation exercise resolving global issues. Participants included Patrick Austin, Nicholas Becker, Alexandra Cardona, Iliana J. Chavez-Jaime, Thomas Hatch, Chae Park, Jacob Simon and Alaura Ward.

“Each student was active in their assigned committee and dealt with the topics successfully,” Moeller said.

Among the highlights, Hatch, working with five other states, received the conference’s “Best Resolution” acknowledgement; this was a substantial award not achieved by a Roadrunner team in many years, Moeller said.

Additionally, Ward crafted a resolution with 10 other states to address a committee mandate titled “The Question of Palestine,” fielding questions for more than an hour to construct a document that was accepted, voted on and passed.

“All of our fine students had successes – and there were many,” Moeller said.

Model United Nations is a simulation program for college students to participate in model sessions of the intergovernmental organization to advance understanding of the principles and means to maintain international relations. The program helps students develop a greater understanding of the nations of the world, the relations among them, their policies and the nature of their work in the United Nations.
