The annual Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday in Civic Center park, featuring free entry to contests, food vendors and live music.
For years, the event has welcomed locals and tourists to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla over the French Empire. And it makes sense for Metropolitan State University of Denver to be a major sponsor of the event, said Gordon Loui, director of strategic partnerships and community engagement.
“The festival is an important celebration of Latinx culture, and NEWSED Community Development Corp. – the organizing body behind the event – is a key partner of MSU Denver,” he said. “Plus with efforts like our Spanish-language outreach, it’s a natural fit.”
Representatives from the Office of Admissions and other departments will be present to conduct assorted giveaways and hand out MSU Denver-branded bandanas for pets from a booth near the popular Chihuahua races; Mariachi Los Correcaminos de MSU Denver is also slated to perform at noon Sunday.
Additionally, throughout the two-day event students from the Department of Art are designing a mural that will then be donated to NEWSED.
Make sure to make celebrating culture and supporting MSU Denver a part of your plans this weekend!
