ITS selects a replacement for Kaspersky

Will be replaced with Microsoft’s Endpoint Protection anti-virus program.

February 20, 2018

computersMSU Denver will transition to a new anti-virus program on all University-managed computers.

Information Technology Services selected Microsoft’s System Center Endpoint Protection to replace Kaspersky, the University’s current anti-virus program, for several important reasons. SCEP is a no-cost solution that is included in the University’s Microsoft agreement. The transition is also in line with federal information security guidelines.
ITS has successfully tested SCEP on over 1,000 University-managed machines with no issues and determined it would be a viable solution.

The transition will occur on Feb. 23 between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.

For employees enrolled the Asset Management Program, the transition from Kaspersky to SCEP will happen automatically. After the transition, a SCEP icon will display in the system tray (in the lower left corner of the computer screen) rather than a Kaspersky icon.

Some employees may see a dialog box with a warning message that says there’s no anti-virus software installed on the machine. The message should go away within several minutes as the installation process finishes. If the dialog box does not disappear within about an hour, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 303-352-7548.

All staff workstations are automatically enrolled in the Asset Management Program, and many faculty members have opted into the program as well. Faculty may choose to join the program by filling out the request form on the Hardware and Asset Management Program webpage.

To ensure that University-issued workstations are enrolled in the Asset Management Program, check that the application is installed on your machine. Managed Windows devices will have “Software Center” listed as an available application, which can be found by clicking the Start button and searching. Similarly, managed Apple devices will have “Self Service” listed in the Applications menu.

If you have any questions or concerns about this important transition, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 303-352-7548 or support.msudenver.edu.
