The MSU Denver Counseling Center for the first time is offering a series of therapy groups for students who identify as non-binary or transgender.
“We have a steady and slowly growing population of transgender and non-binary people on campus,” said Steven Lee, assistant director of the MSU Denver Counseling Center. “At times, there are unique relationship and transitioning issues for students, so we wanted to offer a specific group to these people to address these issues in a therapeutic way.”
Groups of five to 10 participants will begin the week of Feb. 19, last eight weeks and take place in Tivoli 651.
The Transgender Group, which will meet Wednesdays at 1 p.m., is open to students who may be transitioning from male to female or female to male.
The Non-Binary Identities Group, which will meet Thursdays at 9 a.m., is open to students who recognize and would like to explore their non-binary identity.
Douglas Graves, a staff psychologist at the Counseling Center, will facilitate both groups.
Each group is confidential and free.
“We process and share in these groups, and in many ways help find ways to help through each other,” Graves said. “At the same time, we are big about providing resources and sharing resources. It could be as a literal as a phone number. And in the session, students can talk or express or vent or create solutions.”
The Counseling Center also plans to offer its well-attended LGBTQ Relationships Group this semester, too. The group will meet Tuesdays at 3 p.m. beginning Feb. 19. Lee will facilitate the group.
Students can sign up for any of the groups by calling 303-615-9988 or visit Tivoli 651.
