Faculty Senate update

Graduation registration timeline shifting, athletic team mentor program and committee updates.

February 5, 2018

Faculty Senate

Guests of the Faculty Senate were welcomed to the Jan. 31 meeting by Jo Bailey, vice president, in senate president Matt Makley’s absence.

Connie Sanders from the Office of Registrar addressed the group regarding new timelines for graduation registration. Previous deadlines that coincided with census dates resulted in students who found out they were missing requirements too late in the term to address this. The new, earlier application timelines intend to give students and advisers more options to meet final degree requirements. The deadline to apply for summer 2018 is March 16; fall graduation registration 2018 opens on April 13 with a deadline of June 15.

Shawn Worthy, professor of human services, invited the senate to learn more about and volunteer for the Department of Athletics’ team mentor program. Participants are embedded with athletic teams, support student athletes, attend practices/games and take part in unique service opportunities. The application deadline is Feb. 15.

Other business included:

  • Jessica Weiss (Art) discussed the Academic Policy Committee’s work to provide graduate populations the same priority registration process afforded to undergraduate students for specialized statuses (e.g., veterans, Access Center).
  • Jean-François Duclos (Modern Language) reported the Curriculum Committee’s progress into the process of modifying Honors Program courses: Four course modifications were approved, two courses added, and pending proposals were noted as needing further discussion.
  • The MSU Denver Champions program invites participants to the MSU Denver Day at the Capitol on March 7.
