This season, hire a veteran

Veterans Break Pay program can help an office while helping a former service member.

Please consider if you or your office might be able to accommodate a Veteran Break Pay student or students over winter break during your open days. Their wages are paid out of a special, designated fund, so no money would come out of your area’s budget. It’s an opportunity to get assistance for special projects or to keep your office front desk staffed, and give a veteran a job over the holidays.

Here’s more about the program:

Break pay is a program that offers veteran students the opportunity to work full time on campus during the breaks between semesters. This program was student driven, and is designed to address the lack of housing payments from the Veterans Affairs during the weeks when classes are not in session. These positions provide a way for veteran students to earn income in a convenient campus job without a long-term commitment. Many veterans have continued ongoing work-study or hourly positions with the offices who employed them for break pay.

“Our break-pay students are seriously amazing,” said Kendra Stansbury, associate registrar and past supervisor of two break-pay students. “They have done more in the last few weeks than any of us could have accomplished in a semester. I wish I could keep them, but I thank you for sharing them with us.”

Items to note:

• Students may work up to 40 hours per week for the weeks that the University is open between fall and spring semesters.
• Work weeks are Dec. 18-22, Jan. 2-5 and Jan. 8-12.
• Hours are logged and approved through Webtime.
