Fine choice

David Fine named general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees.

The University has a new general counsel: David Fine.

Fine has served in an interim capacity since July and now moves into a full-time role. He will also serve as secretary to the Board of Trustees.

“We are lucky to have found such a talented candidate who ‘gets’ our mission,” said President Janine Davidson, Ph.D. “David will be an excellent addition to our senior leadership team.”

Fine brings a wealth of experience to MSU Denver. Most recently, he was a partner at the Denver office of law firm Holland and Knight, LLP, where he specialized in litigation and public law, including higher education law.

From 2007-11 Fine served as the city attorney for the City and County of Denver under former Mayor John Hickenlooper. Among the highlights of his tenure was the oversight of legal matters related to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

At MSU Denver, Fine will act as the University’s primary legal advisor, working with people at every level of the institution and counseling them on any legal issues they may be facing. This could include employment litigation, university policies and procedures, state and federal policy matters, constitutional issues and much more.

“This University has a special mission and I am proud to be a part of it,” said Fine.

Among many notable achievements, Fine was named a Top Lawyer by 5280 Magazine in 2015 and 2016. He has appeared in “The Best Lawyers in America” guide, commercial litigation, government relations every year since 2013. He also serves on the board of and has been a past chair for the Center of Legal Inclusiveness, which promotes diversity and inclusiveness in legal organizations.

Fine is a fourth-generation Coloradoan and proud graduate of Denver Public Schools. He lives in Denver with his wife and has two grown children, one of whom is in college and one of whom is in law school.
