Nicholas Stancil joins MSU Denver this week as the University’s new legal counsel.

A lawyer with 13 years’ experience, he has provided legal expertise in the field of education for much of his career.

Stancil received his juris doctor degree in May 2004, and began practicing law the same year as an associate attorney at the Denver law firm Wolf, Slatkin and Madison, P.C. He represented both plaintiff and defense clients in multiple bench trials covering a breadth of cases ranging from bankruptcy and negligence to construction defect and delay.

After four years at Wolf, Slatkin and Madison, Stancil moved to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, where he was assistant attorney general in the education and transportation units. He was transactional attorney for contract law and drafted, negotiated, reviewed and approved hundreds of contracts on behalf of Colorado’s colleges and universities and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

He was the lead attorney for all of the education unit’s construction litigation and disputes. He also was general counsel for the Colorado Historical Society and provided counsel to administrators and board members for various higher education institutions, as well as the Colorado State Board of Education.

In summer 2013, Stancil began working as associate general counsel for the Colorado Community College System, the state’s largest higher education system, serving 13 colleges across Colorado.

He provided legal support and guidance to the system’s board, executive staff, chief financial officer, human resources directors and all 13 of the colleges’ chief business officers. He advised clients on wide range of regulatory issues, state and federal law compliance, risk management, open meetings and open records laws, among many other legal topics.

Join us in welcoming him to the Roadrunner community.
