Farewell to Loretta Martinez

The general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees will leave the University on June 30.

Loretta P. Martinez, general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees, will be leaving MSU Denver to take a role with the City University of New York. Martinez has served as a leader in higher education for more than 18 years, and at MSU Denver for seven and a half. As a trusted advisor to the president and board, she helped champion opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds, including playing a key role in the passage of a nonresident tuition rate for undocumented students at MSU Denver. Martinez also played key roles in the institution changing its name from a college to a university in 2012, and in designing the legal and financial structure that exists today for the award-winning public-private partnership model of the Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center.

“We are excited for Loretta to have the opportunity to be a senior leader at an institution that we have looked to for so many years as a model of a great public urban university,” said President Stephen M. Jordan. “Loretta’s experience and commitment to diversity and inclusion here at MSU Denver will serve her well at CUNY, and her broad and varied legal experience at Colorado College, Colorado State University and MSU Denver are a great foundation for the varied legal issues she will be asked to lead at CUNY.”

Martinez's last day at MSU Denver will be June 30. She will serve as general counsel and vice chancellor for legal affairs at CUNY.
