How the state budget could affect you

TABOR amendment causes Colorado budget shortfall for fiscal year 2018; higher education funding may be impacted.

March 29, 2017

The Colorado legislature seeks to cut $700 million from the proposed state budget for fiscal year 2018. While Colorado’s economy continues to be one of the strongest in the country, the TABOR restrictions are forcing the state to reduce spending despite the fact that more than enough revenues are available to fund the state’s programs.

What this likely means for MSU Denver and higher education, is that the proposed $20 million increase will not occur, and we may see a nearly $1 million decrease in our available budget. If the legislature is unable to identify other areas of the state budget to reduce funding, we could see an even greater decrease in higher education’s funding, and specifically MSU Denver. We will be keeping you updated as the funding picture becomes clearer.
