Taking the lead

Congratulations to Dean Hinde for leadership of TECSCU and to faculty member Ragan for her research pursuits.

Elizabeth R. Hinde, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education, became president of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities. TECSCU’s mission is to advance and enhance high quality educator preparation within comprehensive public colleges and universities. Last year, Hinde was on a taskforce assembled by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities that surveyed higher-education leaders to measure the current state of educator preparation.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Emily Ragan received a National Science Foundation grant to research iron-uptake mechanisms in insects. The grant brings $224,176 to MSU Denver over a three-year period to cover the costs of reagents, two undergraduate students, two months of summer salary for Ragan, and one month of summer salary for Professor of Chemistry Mike Ketterer, who will help with an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry analysis of trace metals in environmental samples of insect cells and tissues. Ragan is collaborating with Kansas State University’s Maureen Gorman, a research associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, who also received the grant. NSF funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering. The foundation receives 40,000 proposals annually for research, education and training projects, and only 11,000 of them are funded.
