President’s Cabinet Meeting

President Jordan’s cabinet met on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. Here are the top four discussion items.

1. Dean of Students Braelin Pantel discussed the kinds of questions MSU Denver might ask regarding student applicants’ prior criminal history or student conduct history. Currently the University does not require disclosure of this history and we have other protocols in place with AHEC regarding registered sex offenders. Background checks are conducted for those in licensure programs such as health care and teaching. The cabinet voted to accept the recommendation from Pantel that “we should not ask the question unless we are prepared to evaluate and act on the information.”
2. Provost Vicky Golich discussed updates to the Faculty Recruitment Incentive Program (FRIP) and the Target of Opportunity Process (TOP).
   
   1. FRIP is designed to increase diversity (race, gender/gender-identity, veterans and disabled persons) at MSU Denver. In the program description, updates were made to the eligibility requirements to include the following four classes: non-represented, underutilized, veterans and disabled persons, and special needs.  The Academic Development Awards increased from $10,000 to $20,000.  Some additional changes were made in the process description and the cabinet voted to accept it with those amendments.
   2. TOP is designed to increase the diversity of faculty and administrators at the University so that our employees reflect the diversity of our student body and surrounding community. Classified employees are not eligible. As in the FRIP description, updates were made to the eligibility requirements to include the same four classes: non-represented, underutilized, veterans and disabled persons, and special needs.
      Some additional changes were made in the process descriptions and the cabinet voted to accept it with those amendments. Both processes were reviewed by the faculty senate and council of chairs, and the handbook committee meeting will also review it.
3. Shared Governance Implementation Project Manager Zsuzsa Balogh, Provost Golich and Chief of Staff Cathy Lucas provided recommendations regarding the role of the President’s Cabinet and the membership of the cabinet. The Cabinet will provide comments on the recommendations and review again at the next Cabinet meeting.
4. Regarding the University’s HSI status, the University has several upcoming meetings scheduled with many of our students to talk about the laws governing ASSET and DACA students which will be featured on the University calendar.
